The news of the merger between the PGA and DP World Tours and Saudi Arabia’s golf entities will undoubtedly have an effect on Australian golf. Just what that is, however, remains to be seen.
Australia and Adelaide were the sight of the most successful LIV Golf event back in April, and Cam Smith was one of the Saudi-backed circuit’s biggest recruits last year in the wake of his Open Championship win.
Of course, Australian Greg Norman has also occupied the CEO role with LIV Golf since it came in as a disruptive force in the professional game.
Meanwhile, the local PGA Tour of Australasia had extended its strategic alliance with the DP World Tour and by extension the PGA Tour prior to LIV Golf coming into existence and has been in talks with those Tours in light of the news overnight.
All combining to place this country in a unique position moving forward as the game of golf changes forever.
“The PGA of Australia has continued discussions with the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour overnight and this morning to discuss the details of the agreement jointly announced with the Public Investment Fund to unify professional golf on a global basis,” PGA of Australia CEO Gavin Kirkman said via a statement.
“We have and will continue to act in a deliberate, strategic and consistent manner which is to be committed to work within golf's global ecosystem and provide strong pathways for the players on the PGA Tour of Australasia into Tours around the world.
“These discussions are ongoing as we continue to ensure any new arrangements deliver positive benefits to our Tour, all of our members and the entire Australasian golfing community and those who love the game.”
Like everyone in world golf at present, the professional game here is currently playing a waiting game to see where the cards fall in 2024 in terms of how the merger looks and what events will be played where.
Australian golf fans surely hoping that the Adelaide show that garnered worldwide attention puts us in good stead to see more of the game’s biggest names on our shores moving forward.
