South Australian Caitlin Peirce was the lone Australian to make it through to the match play section of the U.S Women’s Amateur after rounds of 72-71 to scrape through in joint 45th.
Going head-to-head with Canadian Savannah Grewal in the first round of matches, Peirce was up immediately with a birdie at the par-5 1st before the match returned to level pegging at the next when Grewal’s bogey was good enough to square things up.
Things remained all square with pars through the 7th hole, before the pair matched birdies at the par-5 8th with the Canadian claiming wins on the next two holes to take an ominous 2-up lead with eight holes to play.
Peirce won the 12th with a par to Grewal’s bogey to reduce the margin to one hole, a deficit she removed at the par-3 16th with another par.
The penultimate hole was halved, with Peirce taking back the lead in the match for the first time since the 1st hole at the last to win 1-up and advance to the Round of 32.
Peirce will face off with American Casey Weidenfeld who needed extra holes to defeat
Thanana Kotchasanmanee of Thailand.
Although representing Malaysia, Australian resident Jeneath Wong had advanced through to the match play portion at Bel Air Country Club, however the Pepperdine University student went down to Catherine Rao of the U.S.
