Rhein Gibson admits his career was in the balance recently before skipping Korn Ferry Tour Q School and deciding to play on his Past Champion Status in 2023.
The decision to push ahead with his career and put in work on his game over the holiday period paying off almost instantly with the New South Welshman winning the Astara Golf Championship presented by Mastercard on the PGA Tour’s secondary circuit Sunday.
“It was definitely a conversation I had to have with my wife. I wasn't sure how much more golf I was going to do,” Gibson said of his career. “The game felt good coming here. I love the place. I knew I could contend and a good round yesterday kind of put me in contention. To go out and do what I did today was just insane.”
Gibson, who came to international prominence when he shot a round of 55 in 2012 in Oklahoma, enhanced his reputation for going low in Colombia, the 37-year-old closing with the lowest round of the week to claim his second Korn Ferry Tour title.
The Lismore product made the turn in two-under-par, before an eagle at the par-5 10th kick started his run.
“I had a lot of faith in my game, I really did, Gibson said. “I was hitting the ball well. Kind of a good solid front nine. I birdied 9, which is nice, and then made an unbelievable 40-, 50-footer on 10 for eagle which kind of separated me a little bit.”
A birdie at the 15th took Gibson to 14-under before a grandstand finish with an eagle at the par-5 last saw him sign for a seven-under final round of 64 and a four shot win over Kevin Doherty, with Gibson’s compatriot Brett Drewitt sharing third at 11-under.
“To do what I did here on 18 was insane,” he said. “I was just trying to get on the green, maybe two-putt, three-putt. I kind of knew by then after getting the tee shot away pretty well I was pretty safe.”
Moving to third on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List with his win, his first since 2019, with the Aussie set to focus on securing one of the PGA Tour cards on offer, but first he will make his long awaited return home.
“I haven't been to Australia since COVID. I've seen my parents, but not many other people. Pretty excited to get home.”
