A five-strong Aussie contingent will attempt to combat the famed TPC Sawgrass in a bid to become the sixth Australian to win the Players Championship.
Here are all the details of each of the Australians in the field, including why they can win golf’s richest prize.
JASON DAY
Age: 37
World Ranking: 33
Best finish at The Players: Win (2016)
PGA Tour wins: 13
Why he can win: The Queenslander almost always shows up to big events as Australia’s best chance. The Players is undoubtedly the same old story.
Day has played consistently well over the past two years and has started 2025 in the same vein. The 37-year-old has gone six from six in cuts made so far this year, and the game looks well-rounded. At last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, Day was right in the mix until he got a smelly break with a mudball late on Sunday, which led to a double-bogey, ejecting him from contention. Another reason Day can win at TPC Sawgrass is simple, he has done it before. Admittedly, he was on top of the world when he did so, but turning up to a venue where he has succeeded is never a hindrance. We know he has the short game to hang with any other player on the planet. The driving accuracy was serviceable last week (53.57%), vital around the Florida loop. Easily Australia’s best chance.

CAM DAVIS
Age: 30
World Ranking: 53
Best finish at The Players: T6 (2023)
PGA Tour wins: Two
Why he can win: It has been a mixed bag to kick off 2025 for the Sydneysider, making two out of five cuts to start the year. One was a T5 finish at the prestigious AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am, and two other top-20 finishes.
The question mark on Davis has never been his length or ball striking; he is consistently premier in those departments. It has been around what happens on and around the greens. His numbers on the dance floor look promising ahead of another berth at The Players. Ranked third on the PGA Tour in putting average and 15th in putts per round, he is rolling his rock well amongst some good finishes. Davis has all the shots and tools in his arsenal to succeed around a venue that suits him well on paper. He has played well here before and wouldn’t surprise many if he featured again.

MIN WOO LEE
Age: 26
World Ranking: 56
Best finish at The Players: T6 (2023)
PGA Tour wins: None
Why he can win: Lee made his presence known in his first trip to TPC Sawgrass. The West Australian electrified crowds and the world with his surge into contention at The Players in 2023. Lee was in the final pairing with eventual winner Scottie Scheffler. We have seen his alter ego, “Dr Chipinski”, come out regularly as of late, but as golf fans, we are just waiting for it to culminate in a big performance at the right time. Lee has played well here before, is a great ball striker and is plenty long enough off the tee. He appears to love the big moments, and he can do this; it just all has to come together. He will be right up for the occasion.

ADAM SCOTT
Age: 44
World Ranking: 25
Best finish at The Players: Win (2004)
PGA Tour wins: 14
Why he can win: It has been 21 years since Scotty prevailed at TPC Sawgrass. The ageless former champion enters the week as Australia’s top-ranked player and has been playing solidly; there is absolutely no reason why he can’t join some of the game’s greats as a two-time Players Champion. The South Australian-born Queenslander has played in every instalment of The Players since 2002, so to say he knows his way around the loop would be an understatement. Scott has vast experience here, with three top-10 finishes to complement his victory in ’04. He is playing well and believes in his game; it is a genuine chance.

KARL VILIPS
Age: 23
World Ranking: 106
Best finish at The Players: Debut
PGA Tour wins: One
Why he can win: Vilips has always had tremendous accolades for his ability; it was only a matter of time before he delivered on the biggest stage. He did so last week at the Puerto Rico Open, blitzing the field by three for a maiden PGA Tour title at 23 years old. Coming into the week off the back of a win will certainly be great for his confidence. He is at long odds, but the form is there.
