FIRST IMPRESSIONS: I have always chopped and changed which ball I put in play. I have never had my heart set on a particular model, probably because I am looking for something to blame when the infamous C.Hill off-the-planet left ball ultimately comes to the party.

However, over the years, a vast majority of my local pro shops have stocked the Callaway ball range. As such, they have been a regular addition to my bag for as long as I can remember. The Chrome Tour promises to have that “softer” feeling while providing a low spinning option from driver through to lob wedge, which is ideal for this sometimes-erratic ball-striker.

However, this was the first time I had used the brand-new Chrome Tour Triple Track range, and after rolling a few putts on the practice green, I waited out the back of the first tee and juggled the ball with my lob wedge to get a basic feel of it on the golf club.

I liked it, from how I saw it roll in practice to the general appearance of the ball. It is clean, and the triple track lines are not too provocative; they fit my eye just right.

I tested these balls while away on an annual golf trip, and from tee to green, I was content with all facets.

HOW THEY PERFORMED: I have recently struggled off the tee with my ball flight; I had been using a competing model which was too soft and would just shoot up on a ridiculously high apex and lose too much distance for my liking.

Although, my issue is clearly not a ball issue (as the kids would say, it’s a “me problem”) and it wasn’t miraculously cured with a ball change.

Putting the Chrome Tour in play helped level this out; my ball was flying on a better trajectory and was very reactive to the questions asked of it. The speed felt good; I was indeed carrying the ball further than I had previously; this is a nod towards the new Hyper Fast Soft Core Callaway, which has been implemented to help with distance and feel.

And it still had the beautiful, soft feel I like in a ball.

When I put the ball on the tee, I used the three triple track lines to aim at the target I had picked in the distance of the line I wanted to start my ball on. This gave me some comfort when standing over the ball, knowing if I simply threw the clubface through the centre red line that it would at least start on the line I was visualising. What happened after that was, as mentioned prior, a me problem.

When hitting my mid and long irons, this is where I was most impressed. On a quieter day at my local loop, I had the chance to compare the Chrome Tour with other models on the market. It portrays the softer feel that Callaway promises, and my ball flight was more penetrating than others.

My wedge game had been saving my bacon a touch of late; from about 115m, I had been relatively solid, but felt as if I could do a better job controlling my spin and being an average player, this has been difficult at times, especially in the wind. With the Chrome Tour, I felt I could be confident in taking some spin off the ball, and it would react how I envisioned.

Around the greens, the soft feel was fantastic. I was dealt some soft greens, so I was able to be more aggressive with my pitching and chipping, and there were certainly no complaints on the ball front here. I was so happy with how receptive the Chrome Tour was, from the strike to how it checked, rolled and stopped.

Taking the headcover off the putter and getting ready to go to work on the greens with the Chrome Tour was my favourite aspect. I putted really well with this golf ball. I tend to be a bit of a clean freak and don’t love drawing alignment lines on my golf ball. I just simply do not like the look. But this probably contributes to some alignment faults I have had in the past. The triple track helped in this department and also gave me great feedback on how I was rolling the ball. After using the ball on the practice greens and then getting a round under my belt, I became heavily reliant on the triple track, and it did wonders for me on the putting surface, so I might have finally settled on a golf ball.
