This is a simple drill, but a very good one for feeling weight transfer and flow during the golf swing, says Senior Teaching Professional at Australian Golf Schools, Therese Hjertstedt.
With the club in your normal grip in two hands, place your feet together, with the ball slightly ahead of you on your lead side.
Position the club head so that it hovers over the ball out there in front of your lead foot.
Then, in one motion, begin your backswing while moving your back foot to roughly shoulder width apart.
This will transfer your weight to your trail leg as the club heads towards its furthest point in your backswing.
When it is at that furthest point backwards – some people like to feel their lead shoulder kiss their chin - step out slightly with your lead foot like a cricketer hitting a cover-drive or a baseball player hitting a pitch.
Swing through the plane, through the ball, and feel like you’re stepping into the shot.
Without thinking about it, your weight will be transferring from back to front, and the club flowing through the plane.
This will not only help with weight transfer and a feeling of flow, but means your lead hip should clear automatically at impact – without even feeling like it has.
Follow through all the way until all your weight feels like it’s on your lead foot.
This may seem like a complicated bit of human movement, trying to marry your weight and feet and hips at impact, all in one motion. But because it happens in a flowing motion, it should feel really quite simple.
We're using driver in this instance, but try it with a mid-iron, or a short iron with and a shorter backswing – the fundamentals are the same. Step back and then out, and swing the club through the ball.
Try it a dozen times without a ball. Try it a dozen times with the ball. Then go back to your normal golf swing, and hit balls, feeling the flow of your weight from your trail side through to the lead side and onwards, all the way through to your follow-through.
Done right, it will feel effortless as your weight transfers to your lead foot, your belt buckle faces the target, and the ball soars away on a trajectory borne of effortless power.
