In one of the most unsurprising occurrences in the world of golf, Players Championship week has thus far been dominated by discussions about LIV Golf, Cam Smith’s non-defence as defending champion and the PGA Tour’s incoming schedule changes.
All those topics are worthy of discussion of course. And this week, when the effect of LIV Golf on what was once considered by some a quasi-fifth major in men’s golf and typically owned the strongest field of the year, plus Jay Monahan’s presser and more, have brought the battle to the fore.
However, as John Huggan discussed on the Good Good Golf Podcast from Ponte Vedra, the collective golf world seems to be tiring of this as the dominant subject of column inches, airwaves and TV time.
LIV Golf vs the PGA Tour shouldn’t, and can’t, be ignored, but here is hoping when the gun goes off at TPC Sawgrass this week that the actual golf being played receives the attention it deserves.
With all that is happening it pro golf, it is easy to forget just how good the game of golf is and the high entertainment levels top quality tournament golf can deliver.
Despite its detractors, and they are more than a few, TPC Sawgrass has become known beyond the golf world, primarily for its island that’s not an island green 17th. Yet the course as a whole has repeatedly proven itself as a magnificent tournament venue, in that more often not it produces thrilling viewing, and always a worthy winner.

Before golfers even get to the most famous hole of the Stadium Course, danger and intrigue lurk around every corner.
There are no chances for players to take a mental rest on a straightforward tee shot, or arrive at a hole they know should be a birdie every day. The excessive amounts of water are a genuine hazard and there is the familiarity of more than forty years at the same venue that although altered is in essence the same.
That venue has played a major part in producing the past champions list that includes the likes of Tiger, Phil, Rory, Sergio, Duval and our own list of Norman, Smith, Jason Day, Adam Scott and Steve Elkington.
Here’s hoping that, once again, Sawgrass will do its usual routine of testing players’ patience and execution, while rewarding good play and the, albeit significantly affected but still strong, field bring their best stuff. One of whom will deservedly hold the ostentatious trophy aloft and walk away with an eye watering US$4.5 million boost in their bank balance.
A course made for tournament golf, and a collection of the best players in the world getting an escape from talking about the state of the game and actually playing it is a great recipe. One that can give us some delicious respite from the elephant in the room for four days before we get right back to it next week when LIV visits Arizona.
