It’s the most tired phrase in world golf. And so many of those telling us that they are “growing the game” have no intention to do so, or know what it looks like.
However, the latest LIV Golf headline signee, Cam Smith, has the opportunity to do just that in his home country, which he has stated was one of the driving factors in his decision to eschew the PGA Tour and join Greg Norman’s burgeoning circuit.
Smith stated at the U.S Open: “I would love if the PGA Tour would go down there (Australia) and play some golf. It's something that I haven't been able to do personally for a couple of years due to COVID, but I miss playing at home. I'm sure all the fans at home miss seeing world quality golf. I know the Presidents Cup down there was well-received. Hopefully we can get some more good players down there.”
Now that Smith will be suspended from the PGA Tour when balls are in the air in Boston this week, he has turned to promoting the move of LIV Golf to bring a tournament ‘Down Under’ for the sake of the game here.
Whether or not LIV comes to Australia is a seemingly foregone conclusion at this point, but that is not the primary area where Smith could walk the walk having talked the talk, unlike the multitude of others who gave hollowly promised “growth”.

The Open Champion is already set to play the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship and ISPS HANDA Australian Open this summer, a trip that will mark his first home in three years and undoubtedly came with a cheque to tee it up. Appearance money for big name homegrown and overseas talent is an unfortunate reality for professional golf in this country, yet with his newly found wealth (rumoured to be A$145 million) after signing with LIV, Cam has the chance to do something truly special.
“To spend more time at home, not missing out on friend and families' weddings and a couple of my friends have had kids over the last, you know, four or five years that I still haven't met. That's going to be a part of my life that I can't wait to get back,” Smith said this morning in Boston when also noting his fondness for travelling during his early days on the Asian Tour.
If he plans on being at home, and LIV’s schedule allows, Smith taking the Claret Jug along for the ride and playing some of the smaller events on the PGA Tour of Australasia without an appearance fee would grow a circuit that has been greatly affected by the PGA and DP World Tour’s scheduling. Particularly the former’s move to a wraparound season.
Imagine the crowds at say the NSW Open and Vic Open full of young Aussies able to get an up close and personal look at another of the best players in the world. They got just that in Hannah Green this year at 13th Beach.
"Like or hate the fact that Smith, and his close friend Marc Leishman, made the jump to LIV ... there is potential that our new $100 million man can use his own fortune to the benefit of golf in Australia." - Jimmy Emanuel.
Emerging Australian stars, some of which Smith already mentors, could potentially play alongside a major winner and see how he goes about his business and gain valuable insight into what it takes to reach the pinnacle of the game.
From the tournaments’ side, a player of Smith’s calibre in the field would surely help with sponsorship and TV coverage, potentially making our expanded schedule of events a more attractive prospect for other LIV golfers looking for a place to ply their trade when the Tour is not in action.
Like or hate the fact that Smith, and his close friend Marc Leishman, made the jump to LIV and everything that comes with playing on a circuit paid for by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, there is potential that our new $100 million man can use his own fortune to the benefit of golf in Australia.
And perhaps even spark some growth that could lead to our next big star, who will hopefully be playing a professional game that has emerged from the battleground period that is currently dividing it.
