It’s not often your two favourite pursuits meet in one project but if you live long enough and you’re a little bit lucky it can happen – as it has for me this past week.
Some readers may know that when I’m not on my high horse in this space pontificating on golf, I have a whole other life in the podcasting world.
Podcasting, like golf, is a passion because it offers so much more than appears at first glance.
Like golf, it also has nuance and depth and – perhaps most importantly – you can choose how you do it.
Also, like golf, there are no hard and fast rules in podcasting (despite what some who’ve been doing it for a long time might say).
And another similarity? Anyone can do it with just the smallest amount of effort.
Which brings us to this past week (or few weeks, actually, but this project came to fruition this week).
Isaiah Mwesige was a guest on episode 75 of The Thing About Golf Podcast (listen HERE) in September last year.
For those unaware, Isaiah is the founder and driving force behind the Afrieya Golf Academy in Uganda which does amazing work introducing the game to kids from all backgrounds though with a special focus on those from underprivileged circumstances.
Through golf, the Academy teaches not just the game but life skills with a significant focus on both education and environmental sustainability.

Isaiah works tirelessly on behalf of the Academy raising awareness and funds and has gathered around him an enthusiastic band of supporters from various sectors of the golf industry. Including yours truly.
Others in the group are much more qualified than I am in the grown-up areas of business and planning and all the other stuff that needs to be done but when it comes to podcasting? I win.
And so this week the Kids Golf Podcast was born. As the name suggests, this is a podcast being put together entirely by the kids of the academy.
Isaiah provides guidance on guests and helps with questions and I am helping with the ongoing learning about the technical side of recording and editing.
But the show itself is by, for and about the students at the academy and their journey in golf.
"It might not yet be the most informative or interesting podcast in the game, but it is without doubt one of the most important. Not for podcasting or golf, mind, but for the kids who are making it."
While not there yet I expect it won’t be long before the Kids Golf Podcast is fully managed by the youngsters with everything from organising guests to recording, editing, uploading and promoting the pod being their responsibility.
Which is another way the project reminds me of golf. To the untrained eye (or in this case ear) it just sounds like a podcast.
But in reality, what is going on behind the scenes is these youngsters are learning skills which are completely unrelated to golf but that will be useful for the rest of their lives.
From the communication and interpersonal skills required to organise guests and present the show to the technical requirements of capturing and editing the sound, there are multiple facets to learn.
And that doesn’t even touch on promotion and marketing.
In a digital world that is shrinking rapidly as connectivity improves, there is no reason these youngsters can’t be a part of the global economy now and into the future.
Who knows? Some of them may go on to work with us here at the podcast studio. With a decent internet connection, there is no reason they couldn’t.
So give the Kids Golf Podcast (HERE) a listen if you have 15 minutes to spare and make sure to hit the follow button so you don’t miss an episode.
It might not yet be the most informative or interesting podcast in the game, but it is without doubt one of the most important.
Not for podcasting or golf, mind, but for the kids who are making it.
