EQUIPMENT NOTES:
-
Mickelson’s equipment was not only unique in some aspects of set-up but also amazingly changed before Sunday’s final round. The left hander’s 2-wood face was damaged after the third round, with Mickelson fortunate to have a backup head with him to put in play. Subsequently while warming up on Sunday, Mickelson cracked the face of his utility iron (2) that he used from Thursday to Saturday. The American putting a 4-wood in play that effectively covered the same distance gap. “It's just one of those things that happens and you just have to be prepared for it, which is why I bring backup clubs out here,” Mickelson said.
- Mickelson keeps the strong run going for Callaway’s Epic Speed range of drivers and Fujikura’s Ventus line of shafts, both of which have recorded multiple wins on the PGA Tour in 2021. The Hall of Famer’s driver is marked at 6° but carries half a degree less loft, and measures nearly 48 inches to allow him to keep up with his younger competitors off the tee for distance.
- Uniquely, Phil is one the last players in the top ranks of professional golf to use a traditional heel shafted blade putter, one that is fitted with an oversized SuperStroke putter grip. Mickelson often switches between a “claw” putting grip and standard left hand low, including over the final two holes of his sixth major championship win.

‘Lefty’ gives Callaway’s Chrome Soft X golf ball its fourth win on the PGA Tour this year, with Mickelson using the Triple Track alignment technology.
QUOTE: “I believed for a long time that I could play at this level again. I didn't see why I couldn't, but I wasn't executing the way I believed I could, and with the help of a lot of people, my wife especially, Andrew Getson and my brother Tim and Steve Loy, I've been able to make progress and have this week.” – Phil Mickelson.
