Most golfers practise more when they’re playing badly as opposed to when they’re striking the ball well.

If you develop a swing fault and are striking the ball poorly, the worst thing you can do is go to the practice range and hone that fault. In most cases, players who do this end up incorporating ‘band aid’ solutions to try and improve rather than fixing the cause of the problem, which simply compounds it.

This is no way to fix a swing fault. When you’re not striking the ball well, book a lesson with your local PGA professional and let him tell you what is happening with your swing and where you can improve.

The golf swing is not a DIY project. Get professional help and then hit the practice tee to work on the changes your coach has given you.

As you start to hit the ball better again, spend more time on the range to repeat 
the same good action. This is what the 
pros, like Phil Mickelson, do. That’s why you always see the pros hanging around with the coach on the eve of a tournament. A second pair of experienced eyes can pick up 
swing changes and get it back on the right course.

Also remember, to be good at practising, you must think on every shot and develop a good routine, just like you would on the course.
