The PGA Tour heads to one of America’s favourite southern playgrounds for the final official event of 2021.
Sea Island, on the south-eastern coast of Georgia, is home to several PGA Tour players including this week’s tournament host, Davis Love, who grew up in the area.
This is the ninth event of the 2021-2022 wraparound schedule and the 47th full field tournament of the calendar year.
DEFENDING CHAMPION: Robert Streb won a battle of former champions when he beat Kevin Kisner on the second hole of sudden death in 2020. Streb had also won the title in 2015 while Kisner was victorious in 2016.
COURSE: For course architecture nerds there are some mouth-watering connections to be found at this week’s venue where Georgia’s Sea Island Resort has two of its three courses in play for the tournament.

Walter Tavis, Charles Alison, Harry Colt, Dick Wilson, Rees Jones and Tom Fazio all have their names attached to sections of the two courses as does tournament host, Davis Love, and his brother Mark.
The field plays The Seaside and Plantation courses once each over the first two days with the Seaside Course used for the weekend rounds.
Tom Fazio is credited with a redesign of the Seaside course, a combination of nine holes laid out by the famous duo of Colt and Alison in the 1920’s and a second nine built in the 1970’s.
The Plantation Course has an equally interesting history with nine of its holes designed by Walter Travis in the 1920’s and a second nine added by Dick Wilson in the 1960’s.
Rees Jones reworked the Plantation in the 1990’s but the current layout is the work of Davis and Mark Love who grew up in the area and completely reworked the course in 2019.
Both courses feature some design highlights though much has been lost over time with the constant redesigns.
However, the golf tends to be compelling at this tournament with six of the 11 events played to date ending in sudden death.
Wind plays a significant role in determining the scores each year though – not surprisingly at this level – low numbers are not uncommon.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: As the final event of the year, it’s a less than stellar field teeing up with Louis Oosthuizen the only world top-10 player in attendance.
Adam Scott is playing the event for the first time and might find the courses to his liking though on current form there are others one might pick ahead of him.

Texan Scottie Scheffler has been there or thereabouts most of 2021 and while he played the Ryder Cup is yet to snare a first PGA Tour win.
After some great play in finishing runner-up last week in Houston (a second round 62 the highlight) and fourth in his previous start in Mexico, he will bring plenty of confidence to Georgia.
Scheffler has played this tournament once before and finished T5 so clearly the courses suit his eye.
Others to keep an eye on include defending champion and two-time winner Robert Streb whose form is decent with two top-10 finishes in his last three starts and an excellent record at this venue.
Kevin Kisner and Webb Simpson are others to have shown a liking for the venue, Kisner a previous winner while Simpson has twice lost the tournament in extra time.
72-HOLE RECORD: 260 (-22, Kevin Kisner, 2015)
PAST AUSSIE WINNERS: No Australian has won the event.
AUSTRALIANS IN THE FIELD: Cam Davis, Jason Day, Brett Drewitt, Matt Jones, Adam Scott and Cam Smith.
