A host of big name stars are returning to the PGA Tour at the Farmers Insurance Open, including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
DEFENDING CHAMPION: England’s Justin Rose defeated Adam Scott by two strokes.
COURSE: The South Course at Torrey Pines received an upgrade from designer Rees Jones in 2001 to prepare it for 2008 US Open. The layout recently underwent another renovation to prepare for next year’s US Open. The adjoining North Course will be used for the first two rounds of the tournament.
PRIZEMONEY: US$7,500,000.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Several big name players are making their first appearance for 2020 this week.
One of those players is the biggest name of all – Tiger Woods, who will have his first opportunity at breaking the PGA Tour’s all-time victories record since equalling Sam Snead’s 82-win mark at the ZOZO Championship in Japan in November. And what a chance it is.
Woods has won the Farmers Insurance Open seven times. And, of course, he also won the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines. His eight wins across the clifftop course match his PGA Tour record for most wins on the one course.
And here’s an amazing stat. The former World No.1 is 176 under in his 18 Farmers Insurance Open starts.
Justin Rose, after running T2 to Matt Kuchar in Singapore, returns to the PGA Tour, as does reigning FedEx Champion Rory McIlroy tees. Two-time Farmers Insurance Open winner Jason Day makes his first tournament appearance since withdrawing from the Presidents Cup with a back injury.
72-HOLE RECORD: 266, George Burns (1987) and Tiger Woods (1999).
PAST AUSSIE WINNERS: Jason Day (2015 & 2018).
AUSTRALIANS IN THE FIELD: Aaron Baddeley, Cameron Davis, Jason Day, Rhein Gibson, Matt Jones, Marc Leishman, Cameron Percy, John Senden, Cameron Smith.
