Patrick Reed has held off all challenges, closing with an even-par 72 for a four-shot victory in the Dubai Desert Classic, his first European tour title that moves him back into the world's top-30 for the first time since he joined LIV Golf.
The American also scooped $US1.5 million ($A2.2 million) for winning, enough to cover his European tour fines for playing in the Saudi-backed rival league.
"Win early and that will take care of it," Reed jokingly had said on the topic of European tour fines that LIV Golf no longer pays on the players' behalf.
Reed revealed he is still negotiating a new contract to play on LIV, which starts on February 4 in Saudi Arabia.
The 35-year-old American, who is playing the European tour next week in Bahrain, said he fully expects to be with LIV and a contract may already have been sorted out. His focus was only on golf this week, and he took care of business at Emirates Golf Club.
Reed, who held a four-shot lead over Spain's David Puig going into the last day, saw his advantage halved by halfway as he played too conservatively.
A birdie for Reed on the par-five 13th and a bogey for Puig changed the complexion again, with the American then coasting to victory on 14-under 274 for his 12th title worldwide.
Puig, meanwhile, tumbled to a tie for seventh when he penalised two shots after he grounded his club in a bunker on the 18th. He closed with a 75.
Andy Sullivan of England had a 71 to finish alone in second, with Frenchman Julien Guerrier (69) another shot behind.
Rory McIlroy was never in the mix after his opening 73. He finished with another 73 to tie for 33rd, his first time to finish out of the top 30 since he missed the cut in the Canadian Open last June.
Reed's win practically ensured he'll be exempt for all four majors this year. "It's always nice to lock up the majors," he said.
The lone Australian survivor, David Micheluzzi, ended up tied for 49th after a final-round 72 left him one over for the tournament.
