Mizuno’s new squat, powerful, player’s ST-G driver combines the scope to optimise launch and spin with the ball speed enhancements of Mizuno’s CORTECH chamber.
Two convergent weight tracks allow the ST-G to be anything from a low spin bomber, fade or draw biased or simply a more stable compact driver.
“The ST-G 440cc is very stable in the category of compact driver heads. The addition of Mizuno’s CORTECH chamber greatly influenced our ability to create more consistent ball speeds across the face,” Mizuno Director of Research and Development, David Llewellyn said.
The driver’s CORTECH chamber is the key to the success of this driver. It encases a stainless-steel weight with elastomeric TPU – taking stress from the clubface and creating an additional energy source. At the same time locating weight closer to the clubface to reduce spin rates, while contributing to a more solid, powerful sensation at impact.
This driver has a compact 440cc modern pear shape which is inviting for players as it sits perfectly square in the neutral setting. Adding to its compact appeal is the Max Convergent Fast Track, which features two weights that can be pushed to more extreme positions for ultra-low spin to mid-low spin settings. The quick switch hosel also offers four degrees of adjustability to fine-tune address and trajectory.
“We’ve had a significant surge in tour usage for Mizuno drivers over the last few years, and the addition of a more compact 440cc ultra-low spin option will only accelerate that trend,” Mizuno Director of Product, Chris Voshall, said.
Adding to the ST-G family is the range of titanium fairway woods.
Mizuno’s first ST-G fairway wood is a low spinning, all titanium power fairway wood created as an option for the company’s faster swinging tour staff and solid ball strikers chasing a more penetrating ball flight. All built upon the ball speed platform of Mizuno’s CORTECH chamber.
“The low spin fairway wood is a model that we’ve quietly been working on for several years – the CORTECH chamber made it a lot easier to achieve,” Llewellyn said.
The fairway woods have a full body titanium construction with high strength multi-thickness titanium face for outstanding ball speeds. It is an ultra-low spin construction, which has been created through a combination of Mizuno’s CORTECH chamber and an 80g stainless steel sole plate, eight-gram stainless steel front screw and lightweight waffle crown.
Like the ST-G driver, the fairway woods have also been tested for sound, which, again, includes the CORTECH chamber and internal tuning ribs working together to create a more solid feel at impact.
“There’s a significant number of our tour players, especially in the US chasing lower spin with their fairway woods. There are some very good options already out there, so we took our time and ensured we put our time in testing on tour,” Voshall said.
RRP: ST-G driver $999 (9.5° & 10.5°) and left-hand model (9.5° only).
