Kim was lining up in the ninth and final tournament of The International Series, the elevated Asian Tour events that offer a pathway onto the LIV Golf League.

The former Ryder Cup star, who was offered a lifeline by LIV Golf two years ago after 12 years away from the game, lost his wild card status by finishing in the drop zone at the end of the 2025 season.

He needed outright victory to claim the 324 vital Rankings points on offer to the champion, and one of the top two places that would be rewarded with a spot on the 2026 LIV Golf roster.

Sports fans were daring to believe in the prospect of an incredible redemption story this weekend after an opening four-under 67 and a superb second round of 64.

The American went into the final day in Riyadh four shots back from joint leaders Caleb Surratt and Dean Burmester. In the end, after a number of close calls and near misses, the 40-year-old finished one under on the day for a share of fifth on 14 under, far and away his best result since returning to the game after that lengthy break.

It was former Iron Heads GC player Scott Vincent who claimed top spot and sealed a return to LIV Golf next term along with Japanese star Yosuke Asaji, who stayed just in front of Miguel Tabuena after the Filipino fell just one place short after a brave charge

LIV Golf youngster Josele Ballester of Fireballs GC carded a superb final round of 65 to move three ahead of Caleb Surratt of Legion XIII for his maiden professional win.

After the round. former Ryder Cup star Kim said: “Obviously frustrating to not score better than I did. I had a lot of chances the first 11 holes but didn't make enough putts. Then I just made a couple of unforced errors at the end there.

“Obviously very frustrating. I'm sure when I'm back on the flight home, I'll feel better about it. Just disappointed with the last two rounds.”
