The last time Day teed it up at home was in 2017 when he ran fifth to a young up-and-coming Cam Davis at The Australian.

With Day named in the Hero World Challenge field in the Bahamas the same week as the national Open, Aussie golf fans will have to keep waiting to see the former World No.1 and major champion return to play on our shores.

While Day will play in the Bahamas, Woods is unlikely as he is not on the entry list for the tournament he hosts.

The annual tournament on the Caribbean Island benefits the charitable Tiger Woods Foundation and is an unofficial event on the PGA Tour schedule.

This year, it will be contested from November 30-December 3 – the same dates as the Australian Open being played at The Australian and The Lakes Golf Clubs and already includes a strong list of entrantts including Cam Smith, Adam Scott, Cam Davis and Min Woo Lee.

Nineteen players, including Day, were announced for the 20-man Hero field on Monday, potentially leaving the door open for Woods to enter.

Golfing legend Woods, a 15-time major champion, last played competitively at the Masters in April, where he made the cut before withdrawing due to plantar fasciitis.

He had ankle surgery later that month related to injuries he sustained in a single-car accident in February 2021.

Woods most recently played in his Hero World Challenge in December 2019, finishing fourth.

The field includes every U.S Ryder Cup team member except LIV Golf member Brooks Koepka, who cannot participate due to the Hero World Challenge being PGA-sanctioned.

American Will Zalatoris has been named to make his long-awaited return from an ongoing back injury. The 27-year-old withdrew from the Masters without hitting a shot and hasn't played since.

Viktor Hovland of Norway will attempt to win the event for a third consecutive year.
