Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal triumphed on an epic final day of the KLM Open in the Netherlands to win by two shots and collect his ninth title on the DP World Tour and second of the season.
Larrazabal came into the week fresh off playing in all four rounds of the PGA Championship at the challenging Oak Hill Country Club. A flawless Saturday 67 saw the nine-time winner head into the final day with a slender one-shot lead.
Larrazabal struggled early in the final round, a wayward tee shot found the water, leading to a double-bogey on the par-4 2nd and the loss of his overnight lead. The 40-year-old rallied with back-to-back birdies on the 6th and 7th to claw himself back into pole position – displaying a final day putting masterclass.
Eventually signing for a final round of three-under-par 69, which proved enough for Larrazabal to hold off fellow countryman Adrian Otaegui by two.
Larrazabal flew home, making birdies at 15, 17 and showed pure elation as he rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt at the 18th, beating his chest with pride at the Bernardus Golf Course.
"It doesn't matter how fast you run at the beginning; you must run fast at the end to win the race. And that's what I did. What a putt on the last. I tried to make two putts from 20 feet, and suddenly I made it," Larrazabal said.
"I'm so proud of myself and so proud of my team. We struggled big time through Covid, but here we are – four wins in the last 15 months. It means too much to me."
Larrazabal taking inspiration from European Tour royalty and compatriot Miguel Angel Jimenez when it comes to being competitive on Tour after turning 40.
"Hopefully, I do 20 percent of what Miguel did in his 40s. This is the first win of 40."
Otaegui was second alone at 11-under-par, Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard and Deon Germishuys of South Africa were tied in third position at 10-under, with Kiwi Daniel Hillier rounding out the top-five with his best finish on the DP World Tour, finishing at nine-under.
