Footage of a plane crash-landing on Mona Vale GC on Sydney's northern beaches has gone viral around the world. Witnesses reported a loud bang before the 1967 Piper Cherokee began its dramatic descent with apparent engine trouble. Two men in their 50s - an instructor and a trainee pilot - suffered abrasions and were treated by paramedics at the scene adjacent the 15th green.
Magda Gawin - Instagram @mg_untamed - captured the following additional footage, and wrote: “The light aircraft came down on the course – witnesses and golfers quickly rushed to help the pilot out of the plane. Thankfully, it seems there are no major injuries at this stage. Paramedics and fire crews are now on site providing support."
The Northern Beaches Advocate reported that NSW Ambulance Inspector Chris Peck said the men had been extremely fortunate to escape with minor injuries.
“At approximately 2.20pm this afternoon, NSW Ambulance and other emergency services were attached to a light aircraft accident at Mona Vale Golf Course," Inspector Peck said.
“On arrival, crews were confronted with a light aircraft that had made an emergency landing after losing power. Both occupants, males in their 50s, had self-extricated. They had minor injuries and were transported to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.
“Given the nature of the accident, both the pilot and the trainee pilot, had only minor abrasions and were coherent and had full recollection of events. They were very lucky.
“It was a very quick response from ambulance as the nearest crew was only around the corner at Mona Vale. There were no bystander injuries, which is also lucky considering it’s a packed golf course on a Sunday afternoon."
In a post on Mona Vale GC's Facebook page it was written:
"Not your average day on the golf course!
"At 2:20pm today, a light plane made an emergency landing on our course. We’re relieved to share that both people on board walked away without serious injury.
"A huge credit goes to the pilot for an incredible landing that avoided greater harm, and a heartfelt thank you to the members and patrons who rushed to help without hesitation. Moments like these remind us of the strength and spirit of our community."
