We have all played with enough golfers to know that players’ swings don’t change much from day-to-day. What does change from one round to another is the tempo and how things work together in the swing.

Here is a good drill you can use during the course of a round to help you regain that good smooth tempo, particularly with the driver.

Stand just to the side of your ball as you might to make some practice swings but set-up with your feet about 10 to 15 centimetres apart. Now swing the club a few times, ensuring each swing involves a good turn and smooth movement of the arms (pics 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5). You will know you are doing this drill correctly if you maintain your balance during the swing. If you lose balance you will know your arms and body are not working together.

After making two or three swings like this, step into the ball and make your swing. After doing the drill first, you should feel your tempo has returned and you will be able to hit a good drive.
