It’s that time of year when wind and rain can ruin a good round. But if you are prepared, poor conditions should not lead to a poor score.
It’s that time of year when there is every chance you will play all or some of a round in the rain.
But when the conditions do get a bit trying, if you are well-prepared, it shouldn’t have any effect on your ability to score well.
Preparation is the key. If there is a chance it is going to rain ensure you have the following packed in your golf bag:
An umbrella (obvious but so many overlook it at the last minute).
A plastic raincover for your bag, because it’s very important to keep your clubs, in particular your grips, dry.
At least one towel. I always like to carry two towels just to be sure. Always keep one towel under your umbrella.
If you use a glove, make sure you have two or three in the bag and keep them stored in a plastic freezer bag or sealable sandwich bag. When you take your glove off, hang it under your umbrella along with your towel (pic 1).
If you don’t have a rules book in your bag, put one in there straight away so you know what to do when you encounter a casual water situation.
When you’re on the course, it’s important to remember that the conditions don’t allow for normal play so you need to adapt your game. One good way of doing that is making three-quarter swings (pic 2) to ensure you make good contact with the ball.
Some players try to hit the ball too hard when all you really need is a good pass at the ball to nip it off the top of the ground, which will be heavy and wet.
When you’re chipping and pitching, the wet ground will make the ball check and stop much quicker than it does on dry days. Also, when you are putting there will be much less break to consider on a damp green.
If you are playing in a competition, remember most people are beaten by the rain so if you are well prepared for rain and play within the conditions, you should have a good score.
