Australia’s hopes remain alive of claiming The Amateur Championship at Hillside, but after the Round of 32, those hopes will rest with one man.
Both West Australian Joshua Greer and Victoria’s Jasper Stubbs were victorious in their second round matches.
However, the pair are set to go head-to-head in the next round as they aim to emulate Bryden Macpherson, the last Australian to win the title. The Victorian claiming the historic trophy the last time it was held at Hillside in 2011.
Greer, who qualified in fifth from the strokeplay section of the tournament, defeated Italy’s Matteo Cristoni in the second round of match play 2&1 to advance, while Stubbs’ match was one of a number of close fought battles on Wednesday.
Facing Minato Oshima of Japan, Stubbs claimed a win by the margin of one hole to setup his match with his compatriot Greer.
There was almost three Aussies still alive in the event for the Round of 32 after Billy Dowling advanced to the second round of matches having seen off Denmark’s Kristoffer Max 2-up in the first round.
His second round battle with Clement Charmasson going 22 holes, before the Frenchman was able to claim victory and progress.
Both the Round of 32 and next round of matches will be played on Thursday, before the Quarterfinals and Semi-finals are completed Friday to decide the championship pair that will contest the 36-hole Final on Saturday.
