FIRST IMPRESSIONS: If you like putters, it is a fair assumption that a new line of Scotty Cameron milled models will appeal. For this reviewer, that was a tick and tick in the case of the Super Select range.

The silver colorway of this line is just classy, the all-over milling patterns the same. When it comes to the look of the various models, every putter got a pickup, waggle and roll, and from the standard Newport to the GOLO 6 this is well designed line.

For mallet lovers, the Super Select range is a traditional look without a whole lot of visual bells and whistles, while actual putting will reveal the well-hidden technology.

But I am more often than not a blade guy, and that is where I spent most of my testing, and frankly didn’t want to give the putters back.

Classic looks, great feel, good roll, the Newport options are pure.

HOW THEY PERFORMED: Looks are important for a putter, as you have to see it more than the other clubs in the bag. However, performance is the name of the game and these deliver in spades.

The feel of the entire range is exceptional, soft but solid sounds counterintuitive, but that is exactly the combination these provide, with more feedback in the blades transforming to stability the bigger the head becomes.

As mentioned above, the majority of time was spent with the Newport and Newport 2 models that were what I pined after as a junior and have used for much of my golfing life. The latest versions feel a touch softer than the last, while the roll of the ball is extremely consistent.

What I didn’t expect from this test was just how taken I would be with the ‘Plus’ versions of the Newport heads.

Basically, a swollen heel-toe style putter, these look like the putters many golfers love with forgiveness built in.

For those of us who can get a little twitchy on the short ones the Plus models are exceptional without having to move to a completely different head style, and they hide their size very well. Side-by-side with the equivalent standard model will reveal the difference but on its own the Plus does not look oversized, Jack Nicklaus’ MacGregor Response this is not.

When testing something from one of the most respected names in golf equipment finding fault is not an easy task, that was certainly the case with the Super Select range.

For mallet users that like extreme forgiveness or bigger heads, you’re out of luck, but Cameron offers the Phantom X to that end.

Sure, premium milled putters aren’t for everyone, if you do fall into that category though, these are an outstanding option to cast your eye over.
