CLUBS ROAD TEST: SRIXON-I-506 IRONS

GOLFER: BRIAN YATES
HANDICAP: 4
MODEL & SHAFT PLAYED: Srixon I-506 irons fitted with regular True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shafts.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

At address, these irons are a classic shaped iron, with a thin top line and small head. I did notice that I could see the bottom of the cavity back on the 3- and 4-iron at address but I don’t see this as a big issue, as I tend to set my head well behind the ball at set-up anyway. The forged finish was pleasing to the eye, with a distinctive brushed metal scoring line that I found ideal for alignment.

VERDICT:
Initially, I found the I-506 irons to be a little head heavy, compared to my current set, but that really encouraged me to swing smoothly. In terms of distance, these new Srixon irons were at least one club longer than my current set. Although the trajectory was strong with these irons, I was still able to hit 8- and 9-irons as well as wedges confidently at the flag. But, more importantly, these irons were consistent. There was no skipping through the green on one shot and then sucking off the green on the next shot. The face of the short irons looked a little larger at address than I’m used to, but this did not affect their playability
and I really liked the feedback these forged steel irons offered. These irons are fantastic value – performing just as well as other, more expensive, irons I’ve tested recently.
