GOLF AUSTRALIA'S CLUB ROAD TEST

ADAMS INSIGHT XTD A3 DRIVER

TYLER BOATWRIGHT
HANDICAP: 7

WHAT OUR TESTER SAID: Every other square head that I’ve heard sounds like a dentist’s drill at impact, but this driver had a solid sound out of the middle.

MODEL AND SHAFT PLAYED: Adams Insight XTD a3 driver fitted with regular flex graphite shaft.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
This driver is certainly not as off-putting as square-headed drivers can be, because of the shape and the tapering at the edges. The face also sits square rather than closed, which can be the case with other square-headed drivers. Overall, the head doesn’t look or feel much bigger than the conventional driver I currently use.

VERDICT: I was pleasantly surprised. I’m not a fan of square-headed drivers, but this one might have won me over. Every other square head that I’ve heard sounds like a dentist’s drill at impact, but this driver had a solid sound out of the middle. The sound offers really good feedback as to how you’ve hit it. Off-centre hits stayed straight, and were almost as long as a good hit.

The only thing I couldn’t do with this driver was hit a low ball, which I was looking for during the windy conditions of the road test. But the club did produce a memorable shot for me – I used it on a 215- metre par-3 at my home club which plays into the breeze, and I was able to fl oat one onto the green for the very first time.

ADAMS SAYS: “The Insight XTD Driver is designed specifically for greater distance by expanding the impact zone of the face for maximised ball speed on centre and off-centre hits and through Boxer Technology, the geometric shaping used in our industry-leading hybrids.

“Performance meets forgiveness in the Insight XTD a3, which features neutral bias and low spin. Boxer Technology pushes mass away from the face and into the corners for higher moment of inertia.

“The a3 OS is perfect for slower swing speeds as well as the golfer who is trying to eliminate a slice. The clubhead’s centre of gravity is positioned low and toward the heel to close the face at impact.”
