GOLF AUSTRALIA'S CLUB ROAD TEST

nike sq sumo2 hybrids

CHRIS BRADSHAW
HANDICAP: 13

WHAT OUR TESTER SAID: I didn’t have a single mis-hit during the road test, while the distance was what I expected and the trajectory was spot-on.

MODEL & SHAFT PLAYED: Nike SQ SUMO2 hybrid (20º loft), fitted with hDiamana High Launch stiff fl ex graphite shaft.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: I loved the shape of the head. Unless you really concentrate on it, it doesn’t even look square. I also liked the depth of the clubface, which is similar to a conventional 3-iron.

VERDICT: I have a high ball flight and don’t need more help hitting it in the air, so I’m not a big hybrid fan, at least I wasn’t until I hit the Nike SUMO2. Using it for my second shot of the road test – a 180-metre approach into the par-4 1st hole – I was surprised at how easy it was to hit. I have used other hybrids before and couldn’t hit them to save my life, but the Nike club felt comfortable from the first strike.

I didn’t have a single mis-hit during the road test, while the distance was what I expected and the trajectory was spot-on. It didn’t matter what kind of lie I had – the shape of the shot that the club produced looked the same every time.

The clubhead was definitely stable through impact, often feeling like it didn’t move at all. With some clubs, you feel like your hands are being twisted around at impact.

NIKE SAYS: “Ever been stuck with over 180 metres to the green and a tough lie? All alone, in the middle of the rough? Introducing the Nike SQ SUMO2 hybrid, a marvel of science to stand beside you in the most difficult of situations.

“Square head design, generous offset and extreme perimeter weighting make this Nike Golf’s highest MOI hybrid ever.

Designed to deliver exceptional stability at impact and produce high-launching, softlanding shots.

“The lightweight cryo steel face is thicker in the middle and progressively thinner at the edges, resulting in a more consistent ball speed, maximum distance and increased forgiveness across the clubface. “The square PowerBow design strategically positions weight low and to the perimeter. The resulting high MOI and low centre of gravity produce a very forgiving and stable head at impact.”
