NIKE SQ SUMO AND SUMO2 DRIVERS
WHAT OUR TESTER SAID:
I hit one15 to 20 metres past where normally hit it with just a smooth swing. When I flushed this felt so easy.
GRAEME EASTICK
HANDICAP: 12
MODEL & SHAFT PLAYED: Nike SQ Sumo2 5900 driver with 10.5º of loft and fitted with a regular Mitsubishi Diamana shaft.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: I play with a handcrafted wooden putter, so the high-tech look of a 460cc, square clubhead driver is radical. It was visually foreign to me, but it did help a bit in setting up my alignment.
VERDICT: It took me only three drives to become convinced. Off the 4th tee, I hit one 15 to 20 metres past where I normally hit it
with just a smooth swing. When I flushed this driver it felt so easy.
The Sumo2 is meant to be forgiving on off-centre hits, and on the shots I sliced, they didn’t finish as far right as they usually do.
Naturally after hitting a good drive early, I started trying to hit it too hard. On some of my ordinary driver swings, I thought I was dead to rights, but then down the fairway I found I had a shot.
I’ve seen a couple of guys at my home club using square drivers, and
the noticeable thing about them is the uncomfortable sound at impact. I didn’t have a problem with the sound of the Sumo2 – on mis-hits, it can produce a bit of a different sound. But overall, it didn’t have that empty Coke can noise that some other square drivers produce.
