GOLF AUSTRALIA'S CLUB ROAD TEST
MIZUNO Mp-57 Forged irons

WHAT OUR TESTER SAID:
The appearance at address is similar to a true blade, but the head size is
slightly larger and therefore looks more forgiving and easy to hit.

MODEL AND SHAFT PLAYED: Mizuno MP-57 forged irons fitted with regular True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shafts.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: This is a classy looking set of irons. The appearance at address is similar to a true blade, but the head size is slightly larger and therefore looks more forgiving and easy to hit. The head shape really hides the slight cavityback design.

VERDICT: I’ve used Mizuno irons in the past and was always impressed with the clubs. The MP-57s didn’t disappoint – shots that were hit out of the large sweetspot felt as pure as you can get. This is where the bigger head is an advantage. And anything hit slightly out-of-centre was still rewarded
with good distance and accuracy. I don’t think a true blade would or could offer that forgiveness!
MP-57

One thing I did notice was that I had to really commit to shots to get full advantage out of these irons. I got a much better result when I committed 100 percent to a shot instead of trying to back off. If I had the option of hitting a ‘hard’ 8-iron or a ‘soft’ 7-iron, I felt that hitting the 8-iron hard would deliver me a better result.

The road test was conducted in a slight breeze and I was surprised how all shots stayed on line and were really not affected too much. Even hitting directly into the wind, shots flew straight and true. Spin was hard to judge as the course we played had quite hard greens on the day, although I did get quite a few shots to stop close to the pin, resulting in a few birdies.

Overall, I’d say these clubs are certainly ideal for a keen golfer who seeks the combination of blade-style iron control, but needs the forgiveness of a cavity-back iron – and for me, these Mizuno irons fit the bill perfectly.

MIZUNO SAYS: “The MP-57 irons are a crowning achievement in the evolution of Mizuno’s ‘Grain Flow Forging’ and ‘Cut Muscle’ technologies.

This is the first MP iron with a full cavity, resulting in a signifi cantly larger sweetspot area than any other set in the history of the MP line.

“Designed in conjunction with professionals on both US and European PGA Tours, the MP-57s delivers a 7 percent larger sweet area than the MP-60, from a clubface just 2.5 percent larger.

“Both sole width and offset graduate through the set, offering greater
forgiveness in the long irons and more workability in the shorter irons.

“The Cut Muscle design provides ideal centre of gravity location, perfect trajectory, enhanced solid feel and complete ball control. Rolled leading
edge, cambered mid-sole and rolled trailing edge deliver consistent striking
ability from all types of lies.”
