CLUBS ROAD TEST: CALLAWAY X460 DRIVER
REVIEWER:
Brian Yates
HANDICAP: 4
MODEL & SHAFT PLAYED: Callaway
X460 driver with 10° loft and fitted with a regular Fujikura
graphite shaft.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: At address,
the look of the X460 is very similar to the Callaway 454 driver.
VERDICT: I really liked
the concave shape of the soleplate as this forced the club to
sit on the ground square to the target every time. Straight shots
were the order of the day with this club, although I did find
it difficult to hit draws and fades when
needed. However, I really liked the high, strong trajectory provided
by the 10° loft of the X460 driver. Feedback at impact was
solid, but it did make an unusually flat ping sound. The Fujikura
shaft contributed to the overall feeling of quality and is one
of the best feeling standard shafts I have encountered in a Callaway
club.

CALLAWAY SAYS: “The
Callaway Golf X460 driver
combines a deep and wide face with modified VFT (Variable
Face Thickness) technology and a unique sole, designed to
eliminate alignment problems. “The X460 Driver incorporates
VFT technology across more of the face than any titanium driver
Callaway Golf has ever made, resulting in more ball speed off
the face on mis-hit shots.
“The consistent alignment sole design of the X-460 driver
reduces the tendency for the clubhead to rock out of alignment
at address. This has been achieved with the design of a concave
space in the centre of the sole. Weight and volume has been taken
from that area and used to expand the face area.
“The 460cc head, which equals the USGA-imposed limit, contributes
to a higher moment of inertia (MOI), which sees the ball stay
on the face longer allowing for the optimum transfer of energy
from the clubhead. “The X460 Driver is available in 9º,
10º, 11º and HT (High Trajectory) lofts. The X460 Tour
model comes in 8.5º, 9.5º and 10.5º lofts and is
fitted with a Fujikura Tour Platform shaft.”
