CLUBS ROAD TEST: WILSON STAFF CI6 IRON
REVIEWER:
Thomas Czerski
HANDICAP:
13
MODEL & SHAFT PLAYED:
Wilson Staff Ci6 irons fitted with stiff True Temper Taper Tech
steel shafts.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
The Ci6 irons have a nice, clean line look at address. The size
and offset design of the clubhead was appealing. In fact, while
the offset aspect was clearly evident, it wasn’t too extreme
to look at when addressing the ball.
VERDICT: These
irons hit the ball at least ten metres longer on well struck shots,
and are also more forgiving for slight mis-hits, compared with
the set I currently use.
The
True Temper Taper Tech shafts seemed to provide a higher, yet
stronger, flight than the Dynamic Gold S300 steel shafts I normally
use. This was a real bonus for these irons.
The irons had a nice solid feel, which gave me the confidence
to put a controlled swing on the ball. When I tried to swing too
quickly, accuracy dropped off dramatically. The ability to shape
the ball was not that pronounced, with most shots flying on a
straight flight path. The pitching wedge provided good control
for feel shots and certainly helped judge distances accurately.
The Wilson Ci6 irons provide the right balance of forgiveness
and length, without looking like an iron for hackers.

WILSON SAYS: “Wilson Staff
Ci6 irons are specifically
designed for the mid-handicappaed golfer looking for
increased control and added distance, without the large
head size normally associated with a game improvement
iron. The Wilson Staff Ci6 irons blend the strongest aspects
of the current Wilson Staff Pi (Performance iron) and Wilson
Staff Di (Distance iron).
“The Ci6 stainless steel midsize cast clubhead features
a full cavity back, small undercut section and low centre of gravity
across the entire set, with a thin topline and slight
offset for a good combination of forgiveness and control.
“An Elastomeric Dampening layer – a unique cavity
coating
– helps reduce vibration by a third when striking the ball.
This produces a softer feel at impact, as the technology is designed
to replicate the feel of hitting with a forged blade. “Each
shaft option of the Ci6 irons is designed to maximise control
and produce launch and trajectory characteristics sought by average
golfers.
“True Temper’s Wilson Staff Taper Tech steel shaft
features a flexible tip section for a higher launch angle in the
long irons progressively changing to a stiffer tip section in
the short irons, for a lower, more controlled ball flight. “The
Ci6 irons are available from 3- to sand-iron with a gap wedge
as an optional extra.”
