BEN HOBBS
HANDICAP: 5
WHAT OUR TESTER SAID: The Tour Burner may be built primarily for distance, but you can really do whatever you want to do with this driver.
MODEL AND SHAFT PLAYED: Taylormade Tour Burner driver with 9.5º loft and fitted with a stiff ReAx Superfast graphite shaft.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: The Tour Burner looks really good at address – it’s aesthetically pleasing and the shape is an improvement on the previous Burner. I really liked how the dual crown design makes the head look a bit
smaller for a 460cc driver.
VERDICT: The first thing I noticed was the great sound. It was crisp, rather than a distinctive high ring or thud that you might find in many new drivers. Combined with the look and how easy it was to swing, there was a really solid overall feel to the club. The Tour Burner may be built primarily for
distance, but you can really do whatever you want to do with this driver. I like to work the ball, and when you wanted it to fade, it would fade. Otherwise, it would just go straight, which was a real confidence booster. It was about five to 10 metres longer than my current driver, which is also a Taylormade,
and mis-hits didn’t lose much distance. The trajectory was pretty high – I would probably try a lower loft or a shaft with a different kick point – but I liked how the ball flight really bored and didn’t float.

TAYLORMADE SAYS: “The Tour Burner is an intense combination of raw power and advanced physics. A thinner and lighter top crown yields a larger, more powerful base, which produces a lower and deeper centre of gravity (CG) for unsurpassed control, forgiveness and easy Tour power.
“We engineered the crown to be 17 percent lighter than the Burner driver
and we’ve reduced average clubhead wall thickness. The combined weight
saved has been redistributed into a lower crown.
“The deep clubface works with the low CG to make it very easy to gain
additional yardage by promoting a higher launch angle and lower spin rate.”
